Magnificat

Not all the psalms we hear in Mass are actually psalms (i.e. from the Book of Psalms). Others are prayers taken from elsewhere in the Bible. The ‘psalm’ for the third Sunday of Advent is one such. It uses the words of the Magnificat, the great canticle of praise spoken by Mary when she knew she would be mother to the Emmanuel. On Gaudete Sunday, we can join with Mary in rejoicing for all the wonderful things that God does for us.
